Memphis TV 1/4/86 Show starts as always with my 1st wrestling heroes Lance Russell and Dave Brown right along ringside! Before the opening bout We get a music video package featuring "Cowboy" Rick Casey set to Hank Williams JR's "If Heaven Ain't a lot Like Dixie."The highlight of witch is(I Swear to God I'm not making this up) Casey in a yard Riding a child's hobby horse while the kid looks on! They made sure to get a close up of the dip can in Casey's back pocket, because all wrestling "cowboys"must be cancer causing agents! He then won a easy squash match. Also wrestling on the show was Dutch Mantell, The Fantastics, Billy Travis and Tracy Smothers and Bill Dundee. All together there were four separate music video packages. The best part of the was without question the promo work and build to a Lawler/Dundee match with these stipulations. If Lawler loses he leaves town(and loses the Southern title. If Dundee loses he and his wife(you read that right) both lose their hair! The MVP of the segment was a taped interview by Beverly Dundee who said she had faith in her real man and that Paula Lawler was going to be hideous bald!(I have posted this show as I will everything available on youtube both on the homepage of this blog and to my twitter Mashfan0678)!
NWA Worldwide Wrestling 1/4/86 A very eventful 60 minutes, for several reasons. 1st The famous angle were Babydoll goes from heel to face. Thanks in large part to that dastardly JJ Dillion.Tully slaps her and the Dream runs in and makes the save! He says to Blanchard "She's mine now"! Not terribly empowering for women, but for its time super effective simple storytelling! To end the show Ric Flair beats a jobber but refuses to relinquish the figure four leg lock. Dusty Rhodes comes out,but before he can get to the ring he gets jumped by Tully who uses JJ's shoe to bloody big Dust(a blade job by Dusty didn't hurt)! The two heels double team him until Babydoll runs in and jumps on Tully's back.He is about to slug her again, when Magnum TA the tag partner of Rhodes makes the save. A wild brawl ensues as the show fades to black! Also on this show Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express attack and injure Ricky Morton of the R N-R express when they use Jimmy's tennis racket to injury ricky's arm! All that in an hour plus several standard squash matches!
NWA 605 TBS show 1/4/86 News coming out of this how Dusty Rhodes is the new National Heavyweight Champion. He Defeated Buddy Landell in Albuquerque NM(In reality the match never happened. Landell had no showed TV tapings and dates the week prior and was fired! Dusty was the booker,so presto new champ).Baby doll came out with dusty who said "People ask me why I don't look like Ric Flair with his pretty body? I tell them I like the night life a whole lot more than I do the damn gym Jack!" He later inferred that Baby Doll said Flair had a tiny dick(that was a very odd sentence to right). Then their was footage shown of Dusty and the Road Warriors "breaking" the leg of Ole Anderson a "cousin" of both Flair and Arn Anderson in the Omni in ATL! They promised Rhodes would be back in the hospital in 90 days.Dusty shot back and said Double A was next! Just tremendous promo work by all! As far as In-ring the only thing of note was a post match attack on Magnum TA by an odd duo of Harley Race and the Barbarian! To help set up a series of matches between Race and TA for the U.S.Title. Good solid show for mic work alone!
WWF Saturday Night's Main event 1/4/86 Up 1st a six-man bout pitting Jesse "The Body"Ventura "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and "Cowboy" Bob Orton against Hillbilly Jim, Cousin Luke, and Uncle Elmer. The heels won after Orton hit Luke in the back of the head with his infamous cast. Then Piper hooked on the sleeper. A sloppy comedy match at best!
Next up WWF World champ Hulk "Is there film in this camera?" Hogan vs Terry Funk.A title defense. With Hogan at ringside The Junkyard Dog to offset funk's manager Jimmy Hart.Hogan won a passible tv match(not World Title Worthy(with a clothesline off a distraction to retain IC title bout next with the 1st match in the George Steele Randy Savage feud.Animal was pinned when he took a double axe handle off the top rope from Macho Man while making goggley eyes at Miss Elizabeth!
Next up we have a "peace"bout(no rules to be broken so in other words a damn wrestling match, dumbest stip ever!) between Corporal Kirchner and Nikolai Volkoff The Russian won with a knee on a break, the throat thrown into the top rope and a flying knee in 5 minutes. In the best match on this show(a clear indication of how bad this show is).Last match of the show thank God(this show has taken years off my life!) JYD and Ricky Steamboat vs Don Muraco and Mr.Fuji,"The Dragon" and the Dog win after a headbut to Fuji! Please let us never speak of the show again!
